If the Lister Storm is Scalextric’s top dog in the prototype stable, their latest offering in the GT class is running it a close second. The TVR Tuscan T400R came out in Eclipse British GT (C2454) and DeWalt Le Mans (C2453) colour schemes late last year (2003), and set a new standard for the marque. It was great to see that the accuracy even extends to the reproduction of the dailysportscar logo on the roofline of the #69 Eclipse car! 2004 will see the release of two new liveries for the T400R. First to hit the shelves will be the CDL Racing “Synergy” example from the British GT Championship (C2590), scheduled for the second quarter of the year. That will be followed later in the summer by the JCB Peninsula TVR, also from the BGT (C2591).

Slotting in between the TVRs and the prototypes, category wise, will be a brand new model scheduled for the third quarter of 2004. No examples were on show, but expect the Scalextric Dodge Viper Competition Coupé to be pretty stunning. Only racing (with any regularity) in Japan so far, let’s hope some more examples of the new-shape Viper reach the race tracks in time to inspire some accurate liveries. The first two models from Scalextric will carry generic colour schemes, inspired by “Dodge Motorsports”.
Two new liveries are being introduced to the popular Scalextric Porsche 911 GT3-RS series, with Freisinger Motorsport’s FIA GT example being one (C2579, available now), and the Seikel Le Mans entry #83 (C2580, due in a month or two) being the second. Later this year they will be joined, however, by a brand new competitor in the form of the new Maserati Trofeo Coupé. Two examples are scheduled, although exact liveries have yet to be finalised. With a surprisingly strong run at Daytona last weekend by the real thing, expect this new addition to the range to be popular with collectors. This is Ralf Kelleners in the Risi example.

That just about wraps up the new GT and sportscar models for the next twelve months, although it would be criminal not to mention Scalextric’s Ford GT 40 series, which now extends to seven classic examples and includes a limited edition Goodwood Festival of Speed presentation set. They will be joined later this year by an example of the all-new Ford GT 2003. Also, because we like Ben Collins and he does occasionally race real cars, you might be interested in adding his championship-winning RML-prepared Team Territorial Army ASCAR slot to your collection. Available in the spring, the car will be paired with the Unity Racing example #48.
Scalextric does, of course, produce a wealth of F1, rally and road-racers, many reflecting American patronage through the likes of Ford and Chevrolet musclecars of the sixties and seventies. I was actually quite tempted by the new Ford Grand Torino 1976 in Starsky & Hutch livery, but perhaps only briefly.
Incidentally, Scalextric will be releasing six of its cars in kit form during 2004, which could tempt a few collectors to try their hand at creating non-standard liveries. The TVR T400R will be one such kit, and will be supplied with all the paint and decals necessary to recreate the Eclipse example (K2010). The classic Ford GT40 is another (K2007), while the Caterham 7 (K2012) should prove popular.
On the technology side, there were two major new product announcements from Scalextric. The first, and most impressive, is the new Sport Digital lane control system.

By fitting a micro-processor to each car, and including the special Sport Digital power control unit and track sections within your layout, it is possible to run up to six cars on the same two-lane circuit. Then, by pressing a small button on the back of the hand throttle, you can change lanes and overtake, “just like the real thing”, as they say. The system is currently in the final stages of development, and won’t arrive in the shops before the end of the year, but I was able to try out a beta version at the exhibition. The really impressive element is the lane-changing track section. As the car approaches, and the controller button is pressed, a sensor just a couple of inches ahead of the “Y” switches a guide plate in the slot, and the car smoothly follows through onto the other lane. Bearing in mind how fast these cars travel, the reaction time on the switch plate is phenomenal. It makes for a much more accurate racing scenario, including the opportunity for genuine pitstops, “driver” changes and multi-player competition. The basic control unit has an LCD screen that displays race positions and lap speed data. Cleverly, the system can be retro-fitted to any car from the more recent Scalextric range simply by adding the microprocessor, and can also be linked to a PC for enhanced race management functions.
On the test version I tried there was a tendency for cars to lose electrical feed over the switch plate if moving very slowly, but this is being addressed, and who goes that slow anyway? I did find the activation button on the very back of the gun-grip throttle a little awkward with one hand, and ended up using the thumb of my other. Obviously the design is intended to accommodate both left and right-handed users, but positioning duplicate control buttons on either side would certainly make things easier.
The second new product has been entitled Sport World. This drags an age-old hobby like slot car racing into the 21st century via the Internet.

Include the special controller in your track, link it with your PC (onto which you have loaded the Sport World software), log on to www.scalextricsportworld.com, and race against fellow enthusiasts anywhere in the world.
Provided the tracks are identical the software will display the positions of all the cars on the computer screen. The system also includes advanced race management functions that can be applied to conventional Scalextric racing, even when not connected to a PC, while the software offers a comprehensive track design facility. It’s a highly sophisticated package, and the three elements provide excellent support functions in themselves, but combining them on-line could represent a new future for slot car racing, although it might take a bit of getting used to! Check it out as a spectator now – it should be operational already.
In similar vein, Scalextric also have The Challenger System. This ingenious package uses on-board computer technology to “teach” one of the special Mercedes CLK pace cars any track you place it on. During a series of exploratory laps sensors measure the car’s performance around the circuit until it achieves an optimum lap time. Your challenge is then to beat the computer-driven pace car, but I warn you, it’s tough!
A couple of years back Scalextric introduced an updated track connection system, fully compatible with older track using special converter sections. They’ve now followed that with a series of new profiles, some of which are clearly intended to exploit the potential of the Sport Digital system. These include corner sections that allow you to follow a truer racing line, entering wide and then clipping the apex for a faster exit, or crossing over to the inside, running deep and then cutting back to the inside at the exit. There’s also a new hairpin element too that only allows a single car through at a time, with realistic approach and exit sections. Recreating an accurate representation of the Melbourne Loop should now be so much easier!
All in all Scalextric have responded well to the new challenge posed by the many other smaller manufacturers from around the world who have tried to steal their thunder in the past few years. Not only are their cars on a par with the best, in both performance and detailing terms, but the incorporation of revolutionary new technology in their track and control systems means that Scalextric slot car racing should be as popular this next half century as it was the last. Check it out at www.scalextric.com or www.scalextric-usa.com.

Alan Mann raced saloon and touring cars throughout the 1960s and later became racing team manager in the early 1970s. Alan Mann was notable for his allegiance to Ford throughout this period and the distinctive gold and red team colours of Alan Mann Racing draw attention at historic race mettings to this day.

In 1965, Sir John Whitmore enjoyed an extraordinary string of racing successes in the Alan Mann Ford Lotus Cortina. Sir John Whitmore won the 1965 European Touring Car Championship, winning his class in every race entered.

In 1968, Frank Gardner (three-time BTCC Champion and double Formula 5000 Champion), drove the Alan Mann Racing Ford Escort in the BTCC Championship.
